Update Time (Yea)
Sunday, March 12, 2006, 03:20 PM
It's getting harder to update this bad mother. I'm still getting new stuff to listen to (downloading the entire SXSW 2006 catalogue as we speak) so I'm sure I won't run out of anything soon. Just keep it bookmarked.

On a side note: I've been working on a few projects for various reasons, but my latest is Krappy Kamera photography. I developed my first roll taken with my new camera on Friday and I spent a little time this weekend doing dust removal. Dust removal on a 120 negative scanned in at 4800 DPI is time consuming, that's all I have to say.

You can hit up my photostream on Flickr to see some of my pics. Let me know what you think.

Eh, I need to get back down to school to get some editing done. I have an update though.

Decoder Ring
Wednesday, March 1, 2006, 05:39 PM

"Since Decoder Ring won the Australian Film Institute award for best original music score and an IF award for best soundtrack for the 2004 movie Somersault, they have been confronted with the challenge of "Where do we go from here?"

The answer, as their third album demonstrates, is to push beyond their already adventurous boundaries while providing more of the gorgeous same.

Australia has no great tradition of experimental electronic music so Decoder ring's imaginative live light shows, explorations in electronics and dance rhythms, adventures in improvisation (shades of Tangerine Dream in the 1970s) and their ability to create extraordinarily beautiful soundscapes (shades of Brian Eno) have had to find new audiences prepared to be challenged and amazed. At times they sit on the pulsating edge of electro dance (Escape Pod and the mesmerising 451), at other times they seem like an '80s pop band (Out Of Range), early Pink Floyd (Traffic) and a sublime cross between Eno and Neu (Remainie)." - Artist Page

They'll be at SXSW. I wish I was.

I invented that Electroclick term methinks. Not glitchy enough to be glitch, not pop enough to be pop, not electro enough to be electro.

Magnet
Wednesday, February 22, 2006, 06:53 PM

"Magnet equals one Even Johansen of Bergen, Norway, an alluring young troubadour whose gift has made him the premier endeavor of Filter US Recordings.

His music simultaneously follows in the footsteps of traditional folkdom and modern surrealism, treading a neat path between the two. Johansen draws upon a vast array of influences, from the dusty warmth of Gram Parsons to the ethereal electronica of Air, tenderly etching out the mark that is his own unique sound. NME has likened Magnet to artists Tim Buckley and Coldplay, and others have placed him in the ranks of such names as Johnny Cash, Elliott Smith, Beck, and the Doves. Indeed, these comparisons have not been made in vain." - Artist Page

A little over-pumped... maybe. Still good nonetheless.

Uph, meh.

Still here.

Things are a little messed up around here these days. Between my 3 jobs and fairly demanding school load, I haven't had much time for shenanigans. I'm taking a small breather right now, just to complain a bit.

Things that have been occupying my time:

1. Classes (I have 8 this semester)

2. CSS Capstone. My partner is tied up with his show and the profs just aren't responding to my emails. Things are dragging behind again and I (still) have no power to do anything about it.

3. Job #1. I wait tables on the weekends in a town about an hour from here and my hours each week usually total about 20 (or more).

4. Job #2. I manage the recording staff here at Taylor and I have to keep track of 3 staff and keep them on track with all the outstanding jobs. I swear I spend more time cajoling them to get something done than doing anything else.

5. Job #3. I actually own a business with 2 employees of my own. Well, they contract (for tax reasons) but it's still a lot of paperwork and job-tracking. And guess what time of the year it's becoming? (think april 15)

6. Senior show. Oh, I forgot. I'm an Art Major all of a sudden. Now I don't just have to do all the Computer Science stuff, my show has to compete in quality with those of the full-time artists. I really wish they would revamp the system and allow the CGA and tech people to submit portfolios of work for review instead of having to pull a full senior show out of their arse. Some of us take both sides seriously and end up having time for neither.

7. ISD. I know it's one of my classes, but it's the one the advisors tell you to take with only 12 hours of total classes that semester. Whoops. Oh yeah, and one of the guys in my group doesn't show to the meetings and already failed the class once. Uph.

I haven't had a vacation in 9 months, haven't had but 1 day off since Jan 3rd, and haven't gone out on a Friday night since last spring.

I'm tired. I'll update later.

Voxtrot

Voxtrot, Yea!

"Imagine an updated, twee rocker version of the fox-trot. It would be an awkward, often solitary dance preferred by gangly, emotionally fragile young men, the kind who shimmy on a Friday night beneath the mirror ball, completely naïve to their surroundings, until a cute young thing accidentally sashays into their line of sight, spawning something special, if just for one night. For this party scene, Voxtrot is the house band. The Austin, Texas quintet's debut EP, Raised by Wolves, is a stunning mini-collection of John Hughes-heyday paeans, twitchy pop, and surging, Strokes-y dancefloor fillers.

Frontman Ramesh Srivastava founded the band to flesh out his songbook, but while he was pursuing a lit degree in Scotland, Voxtrot remained a recreational outlet for summertime and breaks. But as Voxtrot's star rose steadily in Austin's thriving indie rock scene, Srivastava opted to put his studies on hold and commit to the band full-time. The resulting output includes "The Start of Something," where Srivastava squeezes semi-depressing observations out of an otherwise giddy jam; it's not a far stretch from the Mozzer, but without the goopy melodrama. "Missing Pieces" is the punchy rocker, with plenty of shimmering guitar lines, but it's just a smidge too lengthy for maximum impact, and "Long Haul" is a deliciously sappy, mix-tape classic." - Spin.com

I find that other people can write better word vomit than I. I mean, I could gush, but what's the point?

Last night I had a dream that I was a car and I would crawl around (not roll) and sneak up on other cars that were dancing on top of poles and I would scare them with my horn.
