Newfoundland
Wednesday, August 17, 2005, 11:37 PM -

I set up a tracker the other night so I could know where I was getting hits from and one of the first places to roll in was...
St. John's, Newfoundland!
I have no idea who you are, but because you are from such a weird place, you rock. Use the Contact me form on the right hand side and let me know what's going on.
Well, as a tribute to my new found friend I will now give you some interesting facts i found about Newfoundland.
-----------
About 4000 years ago, people of the Archaic Tradition occupied the entire coastline of Newfoundland and Labrador. A cemetery of these people has been excavated by archaeologists at Port aux Choix on the Great Northern Peninsula. In this cemetery have been found a wealth of artifacts (man made objects) including more than 100 human skeletons, musical instruments, fire-making sets, hunting equipment, etc.
Arctic Hares are native to Newfoundland, but Snowshoe Hares were introduced from Nova Scotia in 1864 and 1876. Hares are often confused called rabbits. The Newfoundland Timber or Grey Wolf became extinct on the island in the 1930s.
There are no snakes, skunks, deer, porcupines or groundhogs on the island of Newfoundland. Chipmunks were introduced to Newfoundland from Nova Scotia in 1962 and 1964.
The motto of Newfoundland and Labrador is "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God".
The only real Viking site in North America is located at L'Anse aux Meadows, north of St. Anthony, on Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. The remains of the sod houses used by the Vikings can still be seen there, along with some of their tools and weapons.
Newfoundland is one of the largest islands in the world.
Squirrels were introduced to Newfoundland in 1963 and they have now colonized the whole island.
Moose are not native to Newfoundland, but today there are more than 100,000 on the island. 1 pair was introduced in 1878 from Nova Scotia (not thought to have survived). 2 pairs of moose were introduced on May 14, 1904 from New Brunswick. All of the moose in Newfoundland today are descended from the 1904 moose and possibly also from the 1878 moose.
The Mayflower stopped in at Renews (eastern Newfoundland) in 1620, to pick up supplies, during its voyage to the New World.
Marconi received the first Trans Atlantic Wireless signal in 1901 at Cabot Tower on Signal Hill, overlooking St. John’s.

Hint Hint

Hint Hint built a nearly instantaneous fan base in Seattle with consistently intense live performances and the release of their debut EP “Sex Is Everything” (Cold Crush Records). Recorded for nothing just two months after the band’s first show, “Sex Is Everything” was noted for it’s energy and lyrical content. In barely twenty minutes, Hint Hint painted a dark post-punk landscape tinged with desperate longing and a wholly convicted fervor.
Hint Hint’s first full-length, “Young Days” (Suicide Squeeze Records), expands upon that mood by combining elements of Lungfish, Wire, My Bloody Valentine, The Fall and Them with strong vocal character sitting atop propulsive rhythm, dark piano and atmospheric texture. The production of Zack Reinig (eng. The Black Heart Procession, eng. Blonde Redhead) and the recent addition of Gabe Carter on bass round things out, allowing “Young Days” to breathe with organic intensity and thick sonic resonance. In it’s span from angsty rock to pop melody to dark landscapes of sound, “Young Days” stand out as a milestone for a band on a continuing path of change. - Bon Jovi

Fitzgerald
Sunday, August 14, 2005, 01:45 AM - , ,

Fitzgerald is a duo from Minneapolis, Minnesota, who create independent folk pop music. Their songs comprise several musical styles, and find a comfortable balance between well-crafted traditional elements and daring experimentation. Nathan and Mandy's soaring, interweaving vocal melodies create an arresting musical human interaction which is complimented by guitar, bass, cello, drums, sampled submarine sonar, and more.
The result is honest music that portrays powerful moods ranging from the jubilant to the defeated, from darkness to dawn and back again. Backed by a full band for most live performances, Fitzgerald have been carving a path through the Midwest since 1998. In addition to several regional venues, they have performed at colleges and universities and national music festivals. Light a Match and Burn It Slowly is their third record after two self-released albums. Bicycle was released in 2000, and Songs For Departure was written and released prior to moving to India in 2001 to do intense humanitarian work.
What they experienced in India provided much of the material for Light a Match--the incalculable human extremes between the rich and poor, death and life, and suffering and joy. Nathan and Mandy molded these thoughts, emotions and trials into some of their strongest work to date. Standout tracks include "Ghosts Can't Hurt You," "The Lake," "Lost in Your Depth," and "Million Miles." -Fitzgerald

Sofamecca
Friday, August 12, 2005, 07:49 PM -

Sofamecca had humble origins as the soundtrack composers for a Tropfest short film entry in 2002. Needless to say, the film won (it was called Wilfred, for those of you playing at home) and Sofamecca vocalist Jason Gann also took home the award for best actor at the renowned film festival. The film (and soundtrack) go on to feature at the Sundance and Palm Springs Film Festivals. Fast-forward three years to May 2005. Sofamecca finalise and release their sophomore album, titled Commuters. It’s an assortment of theatrical, dancehall waltzes mixed with ambient, atmospherics that tell the story of urban life. It comes as no surprise to discover that several tracks are being considered for upcoming film projects. With tracks such as ‘Omar Sharif’, ‘Ice cream and Bacon’ and ‘Death in Clover’, one could almost devise a plotline to accompany the music. Girl meets boy, girl reveals creepy Omar Sharif obsession, boy has interesting food cravings, and the movie ends with a suspicious but tragic death in a country field. Commuters: The Movie? Quite possible. One thing is certain though. They definitely won’t be hiring me to write the screenplay.

Strawberry, Banana, Merlot smoothie = not the greatest. (Edit: just went and added two spoonfuls of sugar and it helped the medicine go down.)
Mad World
Wednesday, August 10, 2005, 11:55 PM - , ,
Tonight I got a letter from an old friend. It did not make me sad, nor did it make me happy. It was just a whole new level of emotion that I have not felt for a long time. It was good and very bad at the same time. Hurtful, beautiful and ghostly familiar. I can find no more words to express my feelings. Is that good? One thing is for sure: life is never what you plan nor expect it to be. All the preparation will not get you ready for that moment when you realize it is all nothing but farce and you really don't have it together and you never will nor can. That is the moment when you fall flat on your face and the wind gets sucked from your body. I have seen it with my own eyes these last 9 months and done everything in my power to save everything and everyone dear to me. You who know, know what I mean. You who don't never can.
The real question that is left in your mind after experiencing lack of meaning lies at the core of existence: Why do I exist?
It's a mad world.
Warning: This one is not legal. Download it if you don't care. I sure as hell don't right now.
